Marine Board Ushers In Safe Boating Week with a Pull

Boating safety advocates from around the country registered to take part in the first-ever world record attempt to simultaneously deploy inflatable life jackets on May 20, 2010 at 8 a.m. The Oregon State Marine Board was one of the groups who registered to participate from Oregon.

“This was a really fun event to help kick off National Safe Boating Week and the traditional start to the boating season on Memorial Day Weekend,” says Scott Brewen, new Marine Board Director. “With the help of the National Safe Boating Council and Canadian Safe Boating Council, this world record attempt highlights the importance of people needing to wear a life jacket. This year alone, we’ve lost three people who were not wearing life jackets, which really brings home the importance of wearing one.” Brewen adds. After the Director’s count down, participants pulled their activation cords and discharged their inflatable life jackets…with a pop!

Twenty people participated in the event at Wallace Marine Park, along the Willamette River in Salem which included Marine Board staff and family, Marion County Marine Patrol, Salem Fire and Rescue, members of the boating public and television morning show host, Joe V. from KPTV Good Day Oregon.
