[cid:image004.png at 01CB7B66.04A51740] The Oregon State Marine Board recognized two Jackson County marine deputies; one for life saving efforts and the other dubbed, "Rookie of the Year," during the 2010 boating season at the Marine Board's annual Marine Law Enforcement Conference held in Bend, on October 19.
Deputy Jeff McGrath had an amazing first year in [cid:image006.png at 01CB7B66.04A51740] the marine program. McGrath received the coveted "Rookie of the Year" award for outstanding accomplishments as a first year marine deputy. McGrath conducted 165 boat examinations, issued nine citations and 55 warnings, conducted four hull inspections and apprehended seven individuals who were boating under the influence of intoxicants. "Congratulations for an exemplary first year," said Marty Law, Boating Safety Program Manager for the Marine Board. "Jackson County has developed another outstanding officer."
Another Jackson County deputy not assigned to the marine patrol, Deputy Scott Waldon, was recognized for his life saving actions on August 13, 2010, when he responded to a call on the Rogue River. A husband and wife, ages 78 and 74 were rafting on the river when the wife fell from the raft. The husband quickly responded and also jumped in, but they were both quickly overcome from the strength of the current and near exhaustion. A bystander was able to help the man safely to shore. Meanwhile, the female victim was located by Deputy Scott Waldon, clinging to a snag as it floated downriver. Deputy Waldo was able to reach the victim and safely get her to shore. She was later treated for minor injuries and released. Quick, clear and decisive actions were taken by Deputy Waldon for a successful rescue. "Congratulations for a job well done," said Scott Brewen, Director of the Marine Board.
