The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the efforts of a long time marine patrol deputy for his life saving efforts during the 2010 boating season at the Marine Board's annual Law Enforcement Conference held in Bend, on October 19.
Capsized boats and victims in the water have kept the Lane County marine patrol unit busy all summer, in addition to the volume of river hazards on the McKenzie River from fallen trees, root wads and other submerged [cid:image006.png at 01CB7CC0.B8625C10] objects that can impede navigation, and also be dangerous to non-motorized watercraft.
On July 21, 2010, three males were tossed into the cold, swift McKenzie River when trying to negotiate an area known as Hayden Rapids. Their 14-foot canoe was no match against the strong current and high river flow. Two of the victims were able to self-rescue and swim safely to shore. The third victim was in trouble. The canoe became entrapped in a large log and the victim was clinging to the swamped canoe. Deputy Jon Bock launched his vessel, and with the help from members of the Eugene Fire Department, brought the victim to safety. Fortunately, all three victims were wearing life jackets, which contributed to their survival.
Deputy Jon Bock is extremely skilled due to his vast experience in countless rescues on the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers. His refined skills, along with strong multi-agency teamwork are second to none. "Congratulations to Deputy Jon Bock for a job well done," said Scott Brewen, Director of the Marine Board.
