                The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the efforts of two marine deputies for their life saving efforts during the 2010 boating season at the Marine Board's annual Marine Law Enforcement Conference held in Bend, on October 19.
                Only July 8, 2010, Deputies Jason Schmidt and rescue diver Shaw Cobb were conducting a search for a missing swimmer on the [cid:image006.png at 01CB7CC0.95676F20] Rogue River near Baker Park.  Suddenly, Deputy Schmidt noticed a male enter the water and began swimming across the river's swift current who quickly became distressed.  The deputies jumped into action.  Deputy Schmidt maneuvered the patrol boat near the victim.  By this time, the victim became entangled in a strainer.  Deputy Cobb immediately and accurately deployed a throw bag to the victim and helped extricate him into the patrol boat.   The victim was uninjured and taken to the boat ramp.  This situation could have followed a predictable outcome had the deputies not been at the right place at the right time -the victim was not wearing a life jacket and was intoxicated.   This particular day could have easily turned into a search and rescue for two drowning victims, without Schmidt and Cobb's quick thinking, excellent teamwork and training.  "Congratulations to Deputy Jason Schmidt and Search and Rescue Diver Shaw Cobb for a job well done," said Scott Brewen, Director of the Marine Board.
