Marine Board Approves Grant for New Boating Facility at Nichols Park

The Oregon State Marine Board approved a grant to construct a new boating facility at Nichols Park on the South Umpqua River, on June 27 at their quarterly meeting held in Sisters, OR.
The City of Winston applied for, and received a grant for a new boating access facility on the South Umpqua River and will include a boat ramp, vault restroom, access road and parking. The South Umpqua is a popular angling destination. The proposed site lies 11 miles downstream of Weigle Landing and four miles upstream of Happy Valley, an asphalt ramp operated by Douglas County. Marine Board engineers provided the design and engineering for the proposed ramp, parking and access road. Permits have been issued and the in-water work period has been established from July 1 through August 31. Construction is anticipated to begin next summer.
The Board approved $121,250 in state boater funds combined with $22,736 of in-kind contributions and $363,750 in federal Sport Fish Restoration funds, administered by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The total cost for the project is $507,736.
The Oregon State Marine Board is funded entirely by user fees, and the revenue generated from the fees goes back to boaters in the form of boating facility improvements, law enforcement services, and education and outreach.
