Marine Board Recognizes Deschutes County Deputy for Life Saving Actions

[cid:image009.jpg at 01CC8420.F1D6D530]               The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the life-saving efforts of Deputy Tom Teaford at their annual post-season Law Enforcement Conference, held on Monday, September 26 in Eugene.
            It was July 31, 2011 on Wickiup Reservoir when a woman collapsed on the dock after suffering an acute asthma attack.  Deputy Teaford was the first person on the scene and immediately took charge of the situation and began administering first aid and comforting the victim.  The woman could barely breathe to the point she was unsuccessful in using her inhaler.  Several times the victim started to pass out due to lack of oxygen.  Because of Deputy Teaford's calming and encouraging influence, he was able to help the woman calm and take shallow breaths.  On several occasions, the woman was going to "give in" to her situation and stop breathing.  Deputy Teaford continued support and reassurances probably played a pivotal role in her survival until the EMT's arrived nearly half an hour later.  A helicopter was later called in to life support her to the hospital.
            "If it were not for Deputy Tom Teaford's continued efforts with the victim, she may not have survived," said Marty Law, Boating Safety Manager for the Marine Board.  "Thank you, Deputy Teaford for having the right touch, patience, and a calming influence that helped save a life that day."
