Marine Board Recognizes Heroic Efforts by Umatilla County Marine Deputy

            The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the life-saving efforts of Deputy Dave Johnson from the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office, at their annual post-season Law Enforcement Conference, held on Monday, September 26 in Eugene.
            It was May 30, 2011 when Deputy Johnson received a 911 call about a boat that had run out of fuel and was drifting toward McNary Dam.  When Deputy Johnson arrived on scene, two adult males were trapped on the face of the dam, dangerously close to the new turbines.  The water hydraulics would have eventually capsized their boat.  Deputy Johnson was able to quickly evaluate the situation and was able to get a rope to the men, have them properly secure the line, and safely tow the men and the boat to the nearest dock.
            "Deputy Johnson's quick response and his excellent boat handling skills saved the two men and their boat," said Marty Law, Boating Safety Manager for the Marine Board.  "This situation is my worst nightmare -being pinned up against a dam next to the turbines.  This situation could have had a very different outcome. Thank you Deputy Johnson."
