Hello all-
Here is some information from the NAGC about upcoming action in Congress about funding for gifted education.

Funding for the Javits Gifted & Talented Students Education Act
We Need Your Help
Thanks to the efforts of gifted education advocates, and our supporters in Congress, the Fiscal Year 2009 educations appropriations bill (signed into law on March 10, 2009) included $7.46 million for the Javits program</WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=572>. This funding level is sufficient to continue the work of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented<http://www.gifted.uconn.edu/nrcgt.html> (NRC/GT) and to fund the 5-year, demonstration grants that inform "best practices" in working with disadvantaged gifted learners. The funding level, however, will not allow for state competitive grants in 2009.
We need your help on fiscal year 2010 funding. Our Congressional supporters are sending letters to the House and Senate appropriations committees to ask for $11.25 million for the Javits program in fiscal year 2010. This would restore the program to its 2002 funding level and would be enough money for the NRC/GT, the 5-year demonstration programs, and for nearly $4 million for competitive statewide grants, which help states build the capacity to support gifted learners. Please contact your Senators and Representative and ask them to co-sign the "dear colleague" letters on the Javits program. Here's how you can help:
In the House of Representatives:
*

Representatives Jim Matheson (UT-2) and Elton Gallegly (CA-24) are circulating the House Javits funding letter</uploadedFiles/Advocacy/House%20ltr%20FY2010.pdf>.
* Send your Representative an email or call his/her office before March 24, 2009. All contact information is available at www.house.gov<http://www.house.gov/>
* Ask you Representative to "co-sign the Matheson-Gallegly letter to the appropriations committee that supports $11.25 million for the Javits gifted education program."

In the Senate:
*

Senators Chris Dodd (CT) and Charles Grassley (Iowa) are circulating the Senate Javits funding letter</uploadedFiles/Advocacy/Senate%20ltr%20FY%202010.pdf>
* Send your Senators an email or call their offices before April 24, 2009 -- the deadline is a bit longer than in the House. All contact information is available at www.senate.gov<http://www.senate.gov/>
* Ask you Senators to "co-sign the Dodd-Grassley letter to the appropriations committee that supports $11.25 million for the Javits gifted education program."

If your state has had a Javits grant, or if your school district benefits from the research and best practices developed by the National Research Center, be sure to include that information in our email (or phone call). Congressional offices need to know that this small program is helping states and districts deliver appropriate services to gifted and talented learners. If you need more information about the Javits program, or the ways in which the Javits grants have supported disadvantaged students, be sure to visit the Javits program page</WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=572>.
Thank you for your assistance, please contact your Congressional offices soon!
