In 2008 the Center for IT Leadership of Partners Healthcare reported on
their literature review, meta-analysis and computer simulation of the
potential healthcare cost savings availble from deployment of telehealth
technology.

They concluded that savings of $4.3 billion per year could be expected from
"widespread implementation [of telehealth technology] in emergency rooms,
prisons, nursing home faclities and physician offices accross the U.S."(1)

They went on to say that implementation of and benefit from  telehealth
technology lagged far behind its potential - not due to any problems or
barriers regarding the technology or the science, but due to a "lack of
clarity" and dissemination of pertinent information.

What was true then remains true now, and arguably is applicable nowhere so
much as in the realm of telepsychiatry.
