ORH Director Departs

[image: Scott Ekblad]Scott Ekblad has announced that he will end a long
career at the Oregon Office of Rural Health on April 30, 2019.  He
commented, “It was a weighty decision for me, but it’s time to do something
new and different.”

Scott began at the Oregon Office of Rural Health (ORH) in 1992 to develop
the rural Oregon provider recruitment and retention program that the office
still operates today.  He held several positions within the office over the
years, becoming director in 2005.  Ekblad said “After 27 years in the
office, 14 of them as director, I think new leadership is in order.  Every
departure is an opportunity and, thankfully, the organization is staffed
with extremely talented people ready to make the most of that opportunity.”

Asked about highlights of his time at the office, Scott said, “The events
that come to mind do so because of the people involved.  I’m continually
amazed by the dedication and innovation shown by rural Oregonians and I am
forever inspired by the people I’ve had the privilege of meeting throughout
the state.”  During his time at ORH he oversaw the implementation of the
Critical Access Hospital program, established the HERO grant program for
rural volunteer emergency medical services and, most recently, developed
ORH’s annual Forum on Aging in Rural Oregon.

Scott and his husband Michael will begin their new adventure by relocating
to the Coachella Valley in southern California.  “We grew up on the frigid
plains and spent the last 35 years in the rainforest; we’ll try life in the
desert next.”

Robert Duehmig, currently Deputy Director, will serve as Interim Director
beginning May 1st.
