[yscon] Thinking Caps...

Hi Cathy,
In RI our statewide reading program is for kids in grades 4-6 and is called Kids Reading Across Rhode Island<http://www.olis.ri.gov/services/children/krari/index.php> (KRARI for short). It’s a spinoff of the RI Center for the Book’s adult one book program, Reading Across Rhode Island. We’re in our 8th year and have our big event planned for this Saturday. KRARI serves as a kickoff to SRP and each year the selected book fits with the SRP theme (this year’s book is Save Me a Seat, last year our book was Roller Girl and we had a lot of fun with our local roller derby teams<http://www.olis.ri.gov/services/children/krari/krarinews.php>). At the event the author signs books and speaks, and we have public libraries and local organizations offer activity tables and promote their summer programs. We also distribute copies of the book to libraries and schools for book discussions. The past few years we’ve had additional funding to offer enrichment programs based on the book at public libraries throughout the summer.
We currently don’t have an early literacy one book program, but now you have my wheels turning!

Hi Cathy and YSCON,

In Iowa, our state-wide early literacy program is not quite parallel to what you have described, but I'll share it with you anyway. It's called the Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award (http://www.bridgetoreading.com/), so named this because its origins were in Dubuque, a city along the Mississippi River in northeast Iowa. It began as a grant-supported local project and is now a state-wide children's choice award, managed by the Youth Services Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association. A committee of librarians, preschool teachers and early literacy specialists choose ten picture books each year in August that are chosen specifically for their suitability for read-alouds with groups of children, and the youngest of our citizens then vote for their favorite. The winner is announced in the spring. Libraries use the list for collection development, and some of our larger communities provide copies of the books to their local preschools and daycare centers.

We also have a program that is developing through the Iowa Center for the Book (http://www.iowacenterforthebook.org/) that is a one book, one state read for teens (we've had one for adults for a number of years)--but not for younger children at this point.

Best wishes,

Merri

Hi YSCON,
I’m wondering if you could all put your thinking caps on for me and help brainstorm a new program title for what we formerly called our Michigan Reads!<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-18668_26038_26366---,00.html>, a One Children’s Book, One State program. Most book awards/programs from the State of Michigan have titles either with “Michigan” or “reading” or “books” somewhere in it, & Michigan Reads! has never really stood out or had a clear meaning. Michigan Reads! is the early literacy program that we implement in March for Reading Month. We’re revamping the program to focus more on public libraries, providing them with multiple copies of the book and a storytime outline specifically designed for outreach. Possible titles: “Every Child Ready to Read in Michigan” (we focus on the 5 practices), or “Reach Out & Read: Michigan.”

So, what do you call your early literacy programs/picture book giveaways?
Feel free to respond off-list with any suggestions.

Thank you,

Cathy Lancaster
