Check out these transoms! An awesome grants success story

The most recent post on the Oregon Heritage Exchange Blog<https://oregonheritage.wordpress.com/2019/03/08/transom-window-exposure-restoration-kickoff-downtown-lebanon-oregon/> showcases a Diamonds in the Rough Grant<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/FINASST/Pages/grants.aspx#Diamonds_in_the_Rough_Grant_Program> project completed in Downtown Lebanon. One of the major features uncovered on the downtown business is a giant row of transom windows.  Transom windows are components of historic storefronts and are traditionally placed above some entrance doors, display windows, and in other locations. Transoms were originally meant to provide adequate ventilation and natural light to a storefront, and when electricity and air-conditioning became more common, it became more efficient for many building owners to simply drop the ceilings heights for ductwork, cover the windows, and bring in electric lighting and temperature control.

Property owners are able to apply for this grant on their own, which is rare for grant applications.

Deadline for Association of Oregon Archaeologists student travel award March 10

The deadline for applications for the Association of Oregon Archaeologists (AOA)'s 2019 Student Travel Award is THIS SUNDAY (March 10th) at midnight!

This award is intended to offset the cost of travel to the 2019 Northwest Anthropological Conference (NWAC) in Kennewick, WA. The award will be open to any undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in a university or college who will be presenting their research which directly contributes to and enhances our understanding of Oregon archaeology.

A $300 award will be given to the best original paper or poster based on their application. The winning paper/poster will be announced at the NWAC Banquet and will also be published in a future edition of the Current Archaeological Happenings in Oregon (CAHO), the AOA's quarterly newsletter.  All entries who present will be recognized in a future edition of CAHO and receive a year's student membership to AOA.

Application deadline is midnight, March 10th, 2019.

Meet Dr. Nancy Golden, keynote speaker for the 2019 Oregon Heritage Summit

We are very excited to have Dr. Golden speak at the 2019 Oregon Heritage Summit on the Culture of Board Engagement. Here is some information about Dr. Golden and the experiences she brings to the table as we discuss the power that a strong, sustainable board can have in carrying out their mission.

Dr. Golden is an educational leader in Oregon and active arts advocate, including her current role as president of the Oregon Cultural Advocacy Coalition, a 501(c)4 non-partisan group formed to lobby policy makers in Salem to ensure that all Oregonians have the opportunity to access arts and culture in their communities. In her keynote address, Dr. Golden will share her experiences both serving on boards and working with boards, providing fresh stories on how board governance drives organizational mission and impacts the community.

Dr. Golden is currently the first Professor of Practice at the College of Education at UO. In this role, she aligns her years of experience in the field with world class researchers to impact Oregon 's graduation rate. She began her career as a special education teacher in 1974, served as the superintendent for Springfield Public Schools 2003-2013, was selected as Oregon's Superintendent of the Year in 2011, and served as Oregon's Chief Education Officer until September 1, 2015.

Dr. Golden is highly regarded for promoting equity and the arts in schools. She was one of two winners of the 2012 Tom Ruhl Leadership for Equity Award by the Oregon Leadership Network.  In 2009, she received the Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect's Human Rights Leadership Award. She led the creation of the Academy of Arts and Academics when she was Superintendent of Springfield Schools and was honored to receive the Advocate of the Arts Award from the Eugene Symphony in 2014. The School Garden Project began during her time as Superintendent and she is very proud of bringing this hands-on relevant curriculum to students in Springfield.

Help put Oregon on the map!

Background
The National Collaborative for Women's History Sites (NCWHS<https://ncwhs.org/>) was created in October 2001 by representatives of more than twenty historical sites linked to American women and some twenty others from organizations devoted to preserving women's history.  In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution extending the right to vote to many American women in 2020, NCWHS turned their energy toward exciting ways to commemorate this important milestone in our nation's history.

The National Votes for Women Trail (NVWT) is focusing the commemoration of the 2020 centenary on placing women's history in the landscape. Because the NCWT map will be online it will allow anyone anywhere to see where women and men supported the right of women to vote, and to go visit those locations when they are in the area. Important sites in each state, as well as the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico, where individuals and organizations supported women's right to vote will be represented on this national map.

Currently 43 states have state coordinators involved in the project, including Oregon. The Oregon Women's History Consortium<http://www.oregonwomenshistory.org/oregon-2020/> is collaborating with the NVWT project for 2020. Organizations and individuals in these states are beginning to add the names, places, and accomplishments associated with the suffrage and women's rights movement into the project database<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oQeqMKJrNYk0DYK1p0ZV_0QhAqOMi-C8vDdfRuIeVw4/edit#gid=1292213976>. The information gathered in the database will be used to place the information onto the online map through 2020.

How to put Oregon on the map
Oregon's women and men who pursued the right to vote, and all rights of full citizenship-as well those who fought against extending those rights- need to be represented in telling the national history of woman suffrage. To ensure Oregon takes it rightful place in this 2020 centenary project your help is needed. Do you know of a person, place, or event related to woman suffrage or women's rights? Would you like to do some research to learn about such a person, place, or event? Join in adding an entry to the National Votes for Women Trail! Klamath County Museum seeks interns


Job Title: Collections Management Intern

Job Location: Klamath County Museum, Klamath Falls, OR

Job Duration: Flexible Dates, 8-week commitment, May - September, 2019

Stipend:  $1000 for 8-week commitment



Summary:

The Klamath County Museum is seeking two (2) summer interns to commit to an eight (8) week internship opportunity in collections management. Interns will be provided with the opportunity to work with many aspects of collections care and storage including assisting with a collections inventory. Interns will be required to present a report on their experience at the end of the position. If interested, interns will be encouraged to prepare a historical or educational public program.



The internship provides opportunities to work with:

-      Inventorying and cataloging incoming and backlogged collections

-      Performing regular inventories for exhibit and storage collections

-      Executing proper archival and object handling, storage, and care

-      Creating digital catalog entries in PastPerfect collections management software

-      Project report writing and presentation



Qualifications:

-      Current student (graduate preferred) pursuing a Museum Studies or related degree or a recently graduated candidate with a Museum Studies or related degree

-      Excellent organizational and multitasking skills

-      Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills

-      The ability to work unsupervised, independently, and/or as part of a team

-      Computers skills, including PastPerfect database software and word processing
