*Description:*

Democracies thrive when people are informed and engaged but political
literacy is dismal. Political inclusiveness is everyone’s informed voice
being heard! Libraries can nurture civic knowledge and skills – and be
nonpartisan doing so! Included: Types of advocacy; contacting local elected
officials; finding campaign finance information. Tracking and “Testifying”
on bills in your state legislature. Understanding how representative – or
not – Congress is and whether we might need some structural changes on the
federal level. Libraries have a critical role to play to widen democracy’s
reach. Hands-on component; bring computer!

As a result of attending this preconference, participants will be able to:

   - Appreciate the critical role of libraries in supporting democratic
   institutions
   - Come away with ideas for nonpartisan library services and programs
that increase civic knowledge and engagement
   - Access their state's legislative and campaign finance databases

Help us spread the word and share this information with your colleagues
attending the PLA Conference in Portland in 2022.
