Decolonization and Mental Health: An Exploration into Liberation-Based Healing
This interactive workshop draws from the interdisciplinary work of scholarship produced by several theorists and therapists in the fields of subaltern studies, family therapy, liberation and critical community psychology. Its framework addresses issues relevant across gender, class, ethnicity and sexual orientation. However, it focuses on the experiences of Latinos in the U.S. and discusses the main tenets of Dr. Hernandez-Wolfe's new book: A Borderlands Perspective on Latinos, Latin Americans and Decolonization: Rethinking Mental Health.
Workshop participants will find a borderlands' perspective on mental health to assist new generations of Latino/as and those involved in Latino culture and Latin America in understanding how the colonization of the Americas is still tied to current issues of migration, identity, trauma and resistance, and how practices of well-being have emerged out of the wound of colonialism.
