I got the following email from Frank Walsh of Eugene, and am wondering
if anyone on the list can help him out. His new book sounds interesting:
Dear Connie:
"I'm writing a book on Chief John of the Rogue River Indians.
Supposedly,
his descendants include the sisters, Ellen, Winifred and Mary Metcalfe.
I
see in your 1870 census that Ellen is listed but not the other girls.
Winifred lived with the Isaac Staats family, but I'm not sure with whom
Mary lived. The girls were adopted out (sort of) by their father,
Robert
B. Metcalfe, when he left Oregon in 1859. He had been the agent at the
Siletz Reservation and the girls' mother was Kitty Applegate.
I was wondering whether you have access to the schedules for the 1870
census. If so, would you kindly check to see if Winifred and Mary our
listed? If they are, would you please let me know. Thanks a lot!"
Best wishes.
