Betty,
I grew up in Noti, Oregon and have heard that story numerous times. I've never really known how true the story is, and I was surprised years ago when I found it listed as an "official" story of how the little town was named.

Have you heard the story about Noti,Oregon. A Siuslaw Indian and A white
settler were heading from mapleton to Eugene. The Indiahad a horse and offered to share the horse. They started out with the Indian riding and the white settler running. At the agreed on tie spots the rider would tie up the horse and then start walking. All went well until the spot where Noti was later settled. the white settler decided he had more right to ride than the siuslaw. When the whiteman reached Eugene he stopped at the local bar to drink. The Indian continued walking from Noti to Eugene. When he arrived at the bar He came in and informed the crowd, "Him no tie." The white man was arrested. And noone was allowed to forget his mistake.
