Nancy,  Thanks for your reply.  Yes that's him.  That is one reason I thought there might have been an obit.  His father was rather wealthy and Alex B did marry the famous Anna Balch. 
I forgot to mention that his burial in Greenwood Cem was handled by Cooke undertaking.  Would you know if their records are available somewhere?

        My cousin, Alexander B. Hamilton, died in Portland Dec 23 1898.  I have
        tried to find his obituary in the Ancestry.com newspaper and obituary
        databases without
        success-- they do not cover the year 1898.  I would really appreciate it if
        someone could do a lookup for me.  Thanks ever so much.
