[or-roots] Need a look up in 1930 census

So, the name we're looking for to be Native American is
Shepherd/Shepard/Sheperd, or Blanchette.

There are no Native Americans with Shep* for a last name in the 1880 or any
earlier censuses for Oregon.

That may or may not mean anything, as the Indian population may not have
been given, or taken, anglicized names by that point.

Which brings me to this. The fact that the family isn't on the census as
Indian isn't telling, but at least suggestive. There were only 769 people
identified as Indian, born in Oregon, father and mother born in Oregon, on
the1880, 3,000 in 1910.

Thirty-two in Florence, Lane County. Sixty-nine in Douglas.

1920 has similar figures.

On the other side, looking for Ada, we find no Blanchette, but do find:

Ada Pichette -- Grande Ronde, Yamhill, OR abt 1909 Oregon Daughter in the
1910 census.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the "right" family, but it illustrates, I think,
the problems faced here.

Additionally, there's the question of "which Indian community?" I remember
my aunt traveling east from Cottage Grove to a desperately poor community,
but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

However, here's an interesting site to look at:

Here are some other death certificate clues:

Name: Shepard, Ruth J.
County: Deschutes
Death Date: 3 Nov 1917
Certificate: 62

Name: Shepherd, Ada I
County: Marion
Death Date: 30 Apr 1946
Certificate: 3541

Name: Shepard, Ada
County: Clatsop
Death Date: 13 Jan 1936
Certificate: 13
Spouse: John

Name: Shepherd, Homer
County: Coos
Death Date: 28 Oct 1919
Certificate: 176

I suspect the best next place to look is at the death certificate. It may
give quite a bit more information.

I agree that if there is, or is not, a native American heritage here, the
kids could do well to research it. But, without more information, it's
pretty futile. Maybe someone could check with the county courthouse for a
birth certificate. Or, the state.

I also, however, have to agree that if the carrot is to get funds or other
benefits from one of the tribes, I'd be betting no. A grandmother who may
be half or whole part Indian won't get much these days.

Judy,

You may have missed my earlier post with 'what' info I have. It isn't much,
more a shot in the dark. In the sixties this family only claimed the
father's (Kathleen's husband) Irish history. With the 'new' attitude toward
Native Americans, the inside the home stories are leaking out. Each child
has a different twist. Here is my original post. Linage is Kathleen > son >
daughter (the child I'm trying to help) The information is from the
son(father)'s baby book.

I am trying to help a friend learn a bit about their history. Their mother
was supposedly Native American.

She was born
Kathleen Patricia Shepard
25 Jul 1925
Cottage Grove, Oregon

Her parents were
Homer Glen Shepard
Ada Ruth Blanchette

Can anyone help me?
