You could probably have your bookstore in your area order it.

As I said it will not be released until April 8th. and the title is.

"Oregon at Work 1859-2009", I am not sure who will be shown as the Authors, it is complied by Worksource Oregon which is the State Employment Department.

Those of us who contributed to the book are invited to the release party at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem Oregon, there were many contributors from all over the State of Oregon, so there should be some great old photos in the book.

I, too, enjoy this discussion about the Oregon Trail. One of my
gr-gr-grandfathers came in 1848 (Griffin), and the other in 1852 (Hamlin).
When I think about the hardships they faced as they traveled to and then settled
in this new land, it makes me very proud.

I love this discussion about the Oregon Trail. So many of us have
ancestors that traveled that trail and I worry that the history of the trail
over time is becoming diminished.

My early Oregon ancestors - Cox, King, McCarty - all came to Oregon via
the trail. They joined the many pioneers on their to Oregon in Missouri
and were among some of the earliest to arrive here. I am very proud of
my pioneer stock and am eager to finally begin to put that history together
for our family.

The History of the Northwest as it is related to my family is one of my passions, one thing I have been trying to find is my Father's Step-Sister gave an interview on the Old Kvan Vancouver, Wa. radio stn. in the 1940's before she passed away on coming across the Oregon trail as a Child, one of the family used to have transcripts of that interview, unfortuneatly the one that had them passed away years ago and they may have been thown out.

I always urge anyone who has family data, photo albums Etc. that they do not want give them to a Genealogy or Historical Society, where they can be preserved, someone someday may want to see that information, a lot of history has been lost by just being thrown out my family members that did not want it.

I see that one of your names is McCarty, there is a book out, "In Pursutt of The McCartys" by Jon M. & Donna McDaniel Skovlin, Reflections Publishing Company. Cove Oregon, 2001.

It has a lot of McCarty History in it, do not know if any are related to yours, but is interesting and has some of my family in it.

I also love the history of the Oregon Trail and this
website 'or-roots' as all of you talk about old and new information about
the trail and our pioneer families. My grandmother showed us as kids old wagon
wheel ruts along the highway by Columbia River, Biggs Junction, Deschutes
River and Dalles, OR. I remember seeing the ruts closer to the
Dalles and they were on the side of a hill kind of. I can still visualize
it in my head like a picture. When I was a kid my mom actually drove her car on
the Barlow road at least that's what I remember it being and it was so
bumpy but fun. In my research now I see I am related to Samuel K Barlow though
his 2 son's who married Larkin sisters and then back from them the Plank
& Lydalls. My mother's side of family came on
the trail from Franklin Co., Missouri & Keokuck, Iowa in 1852 to Marion Co.
were McCubbins, Stevens. Then some went to Dayton, WA. to live & die,
married into the Flanagan, Parson, Eaton & more.

There is a look
at some of the trails on my website under Oregon Trail
101 by Prof. Jim Tompkins. That may answer some trail questions. Another good
source are the two books by Gregory Franzwa…Oregon Trail Maps and The Oregon Trail Revisited.
As much as I have worked with Oregon
pioneers for the past 25 years I still am not a trail buff so when in doubt I
refer to Greg’s books. They are available at most public libraries and are
available for purchase on the internet. Check the OCTA bookstore first.

My family came by wagon train in 1859 to Genoa
( formerly Mormon Station) Nevada, relocated
to WallaWalla, WA
in 1883 and part of them branched off to establish a ranch in Wallowa, OR
in 1893. The question is how does one determine what trail was used
and what train they were part of? The balance of their train
continued on into CA. Can you also suggest a few good reads or websites on this
topic? Thanks !

Thanks Stephanie,

I'll go to their site first. I have a short list of
books from the oregon.gov site for Wallowa County history books but the folks
there couldn't help as to whether or not my family was actually included in
them. I'd prefer to buy at the local level when at all possible, which seems to
be my little bookstore in town for some titles - will save on shipping &

Hi Ingrid -

Have you ever came across the surnames Lydall, Downing.
They lived near Enterprise & Wallowa, OR. My
grandmother was a Lydall and her 1st husband was George Orin Downing of Wallowa,
OR.

Thanks, Nancy

Hi Nancy, No I haven't to date even though Lydall does
bear some phonetic resemblance to Lightle. Are your Lydalls of
German/Bavarian/Swiss extraction having immigrated in the late 17's, very
earliest 18's? My name underwent some changes at entry into the US and not
uniformly across all family members (nothing as challenging as a puzzle with
lots of pieces missing in the box). That spelling does pop up with mine on
Soundex searches, I'll keep my eyes open.

Some of my easily traced Oregon ancestors included
Montgomery/Holloway by blood and Johnson/Stone by marriage (and plenty more to
be found). I've even tripped over some Hansens that come off my Father's
Mother's side. Ingrid

Yes, there are several different spellings for Lydall,
Lydell, Lytle and etc. I think my Lydalls were from England originally (not
sure), but my grandmother mother's family were German, Bavarian, Swiss on the
Plank side. When I get time I will research the spelling of your
name Lightle and mine Lydall & see what comes up as our families lived
in the same general area. You never know <g>

Yes, all the Oregon Trail discussions have been fun. When I
read:

"Ingrid - Yes, there are several different spellings for Lydall, Lydell,

FYI: I did a search for "Lytle Boulevard" +Nyssa, Oregon, and
found the following information on the Nyssa, Oregon Chanber of
Commerce website:

"Lytle Boulevard Ruts: Oregon Trail wagon ruts are
visible today along Lytle Boulevard. Early travelers taking the "South Route"
(those who had crossed the Snake River before Fort Boise and followed the south
side of the river) met up with the main trail in this general area. An
interpretive site is located on Lytle Boulevard near Keeney
Pass." found at: http://www.nyssachamber.com/recreation.html
